Berat, Albania

About

Berat's historic quarters of Mangalem and Gorica face each other across the Osum River, their white Ottoman houses with tightly stacked windows earning the city its nickname 'City of a Thousand Windows'. Mangalem was the Muslim quarter and Gorica the Christian one, joined by a historic stone bridge. The old town gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008 as a rare example of religious coexistence and preserved Ottoman architecture.
