Elbasan Castle Quarter

Living neighborhood inside 15th-century walls

Elbasan, Albania

About

Elbasan Castle is a 15th-century fortress built around 1466 under Sultan Mehmet II on Roman and Byzantine foundations along the ancient Via Egnatia. Unusually, its walls still enclose a living residential quarter, with traditional houses, churches, mosques and cafes among the cultural monuments. It is one of the few Balkan castles fully integrated into everyday urban life.
